Passages in the Bible Where Jesus Raised
Someone from the Dead
1. Jairus’ Daughter
A 12-year-old girl who had just died.
Matthew 9:18–26
Mark 5:21–43 (most detailed account)
Luke 8:40–56
Key words: “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” (Mark 5:41)
Significance: Jesus restored her immediately to her family, demonstrating His authority over death
even moments after it occurred.
2. The Widow’s Son at Nain
Luke 7:11–17
Key words: “Young man, I say to you, arise.”
The dead man sat up and began speaking, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
Significance: Jesus acted entirely on His own compassion—the widow never asked Him for a
miracle.
3. Lazarus of Bethany
John 11:1–44
Key words: “Lazarus, come forth.”
Lazarus came out of the tomb still wrapped in burial cloths.
Significance: This is Jesus’ greatest public miracle before His crucifixion. Earlier in the chapter
Jesus declares, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall
he live.” (John 11:25)
Other Resurrection Passages
Matthew 27:50–53 records that after Jesus’ resurrection, many saints who had died were raised
and appeared in Jerusalem.
Jesus also foretold His own resurrection (Matthew 16:21; Mark 8:31; Luke 9:22). His resurrection is
recorded in Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, and John 20–21.
Summary
The only three individuals explicitly recorded as being raised from the dead by Jesus during His
earthly ministry are:
• Jairus’ daughter
• The widow’s son at Nain
• Lazarus of BethanyThese miracles demonstrate Jesus’ authority over death and point to His own resurrection and the
promise of eternal life for those who believe in Him.
